All of us used to be huge fans of cute cartoon characters like Disney princesses, Mickey Mouse, and even Tom and Jerry but do you remember those ugly and creepy cartoon characters who used to entertain us with their incredible humor? We are sure you’d know some of them from your childhood!
Disney is known for producing the most handsome heroic characters who grab the attention of every little girl and capture the heart of every beautiful princess with their charm and worth-falling-for smirk. However, Shrek is an exception here since despite being a heroic character, he possesses an ugly demeanor and personality and that’s exactly what makes him more interesting.
In the series, Shrek is shown as a giant, ugly, and green ogre who is having a problem with normal humans due to his social phobia. However, this phobia restrains him from the human community only until he falls in love with a mysterious princess Fiona. Later on, Shrek discovers that Fiona also evolves into an ogre every night and they get married in the end.
The thing which is worth mentioning here is that even both the male and female characters of the series are ugly and strange-looking, they have more humanoid traits and more affectionate hearts – what we called, a real combo of BEAUTY (by heart) AND THE BEAST (BY APPEARANCE).
The second ugly character on our list is Ursula, the female villain from The Little Mermaid. She is shown as an ambitious, power-hungry, and extremely manipulative witch who knows very well how to turn a fairy tale into a tragedy.
However, the traits which make this character a great villain is her sassy sense of humor and flamboyant way of talking. Unlike Shrek, she doesn’t seem to panic in jumping dangers or playing evil games. And most of all, despite looking like an absurd octopus with eight legs and a nearly equal number of chins, she feels completely comfortable in her body.
The thing which makes her look even eviler is her cakey makeup, white hair, and bluish-purple skin. Even prince Eric noticed her poor makeup skills at first glance and seemed a little frightened of her at some points.
3. Hey, Arnold!
Almost all of us, the 90s kids, have grown up watching this hilarious show featuring a group of high-school friends wherein, the lead character is, undoubtedly, Arnold. The center theme of the show revolves around the daily life incidents of Arnold and his interaction with his family, friends, and schoolmates.
Speaking of his appearance, Arnold had a strange football-shaped head, funky hair, which looked like two blonde bushes, and a huge bald spot. However, it’s not only Arnold who was ugly and creepy, but almost all the characters were equally weird in a different way. For example, Helga, the mean girl, was having a unibrow, blonde pigtail, and tomboy appearance which doesn’t go with her pink girly dress in any way.
The trait which makes Arnold the heroic and lovable character was his optimistically-beautiful nature and ability to see only the best in every person. Every episode of the show was filled with lessons and some real-time historical facts and that’s why we felt a different sort of attraction towards this cartoon show.
4. Olive Oyl
Ever hear about some ugly character for whom two sailors are ready to die? Yeah, it’s none other than the least sassy chic from The Popeye – the sailor man!
You can’t decide which is the primary feature that makes her so irritable and ridiculous. Perhaps it’s her giant man-like feet over which she used to wear extremely out of fashion and not-going-with clodhoppers. Or perhaps it’s her irritating voice which is further intensified by her stupidity and aggressive behavior towards the right man.
Or maybe it is her small and half-bald head which she adored with half-buns or the stick-thin limbs. All in all, one cannot say that the character of olive Oyl can be made less ugly by improving one or two things. Still, if she is shown to be chased by Bluto and Popeye in every other episode, then she really deserved a standing ovation!
5. The Simpsons
The love for this cartoon show is top of everything else and since almost all of us were busy praising the graphics, storyline, and top-notch comedy, we forget to notice how ugly the characters were.
All the characters of the Simpsons family were nothing but the yellow ugly ducklings who were having all the wrong curves. Moreover, all the characters were designed to face sideways, most of the time. Even if you catch some glimpses of those characters, looking straight into the camera, all you’d see will be piggy noses, thin-lined mouths, unusually spaced teeth, and googly eyes.
Especially in the first two seasons, the characters were oddly deformed and horrible. Thankfully, they started to look a bit less weird in the next seasons, but still, they succeeded to mark their position in our list of ugly cartoon characters.
