It’s getting harder and harder to be healthy. In terms of meat, supermarkets are selling ready meals of dubious nutritional quality cheaper than the ingredients required to make them at home. Fruit and veg are suffering vast inflations in price, where chocolate and crisps are managing to keep to an attractively steady rate. Fortunately there are still a few ways to save a little cash on your Healthy food bills, and you can find a few of them below.

Stick to the Basics

Sure, you sometimes want to pay that little extra for a quality product, meat is often a case of this. But on certain products there is almost no noticeable difference. Oats, salts, sugar flour and rice are all absolute baseline products, and there’s no meaningful difference between the different price ranges. Paying 50p for two kilos of own-brand value flour will be about identical to paying £2 for a luxury brand.

Don’t fall for the marketing hype, ask yourself “Is there any way they could get this product wrong?” a lasagne requires certain expertise to make, and may have sacrificed quality for price in the value ranges. But if you have the ability to create rice and oats, it’s almost impossible to turn them into a bad product. The cheaper you can find them the better, don’t be picky.

Hit the Market

Supermarkets have immense overheads. They need to pay staff, fund the immense energy drain their stores represent. You’re bound to have a market within driving distance, likely somewhere in town,

and it’ll be full of traders seeking to lure in your custom.

Unlike supermarkets, this isn’t a closed environment. Whenever a trader lowers his prices the rest have to respond. Expect to see bowls of fruit and veg sold for less than a quarter of their supermarket equivalents on a good day, there’s really no better place to stock up. Just remember that many markets aren’t a daily affair, and if you come at the wrong time they could easily be out of competitive stock.

Supermarkets may have the benefits of almost 24 hour service,

but a local market is worth it for the savings potential.

Visit the Butcher’s:

Cereals and vegetables are all well and good, but chances are you want to get some protein into you,

and most of the time that means meat. Supermarkets sometimes offer decent deals on meat, but again, overheads. Best to find the butchers in the town centre, hopefully they’ll be competing. Expect to see plenty of good quality meat on offer with minimal packaging, and there’s a much wider variety than what you pick up in superstores. If you’re feeling particularly frugal, check if they’re handing out any offers on loose off-cuts. These are usually perfectly edible, but unattractive enough the butcher tries to unload them as fast as possible.
